I am so tired of this dumb-ass idea that Scott has “problems with authority.”

As if the reason why he’s not in Derek’s pack is because he responds badly to people telling him what to do or something. We’ve never seen him act like that with people who actually have authority over him, like his teachers or his boss or his mom.

There is no canonical evidence supporting this idea and I’m tired of seeing it. Bottom line, Derek’s actions were extremely abrasive to Scott even when he was still trying to help him and later go against Scott’s moral code entirely. Of course he’s not going to listen to Derek. Why is this so hard to understand?

Because nothing is ever Derek’s fault, doncha know. He’s had a hard life. It’s Scott’s fault for not being more understanding (though he is perfectly understanding to everyone else go figure). He wasn’t a shitty alpha to the betas, he was just practicing TOUGH LOVE (I’ve seen someone say this).

This fandom sure has a way of making me regret things, like finding out that stuff about Scott’s father.

Oh really?

Is that anything like in season 1 when Derek told Scott that he needed Scott’s help to find the Alpha? And that Derek would help him fight the Alpha’s influence so that Scott wouldn’t become a killer? But then he stopped helping Scott as soon as he found out who the Alpha was? As if he was only using Scott all along and didn’t need him anymore?

And how he stood by and watched while Peter cornered a clearly scared Scott when he was vulnerable, intimidated and assaulted him? And just said “it happens” when Scott brought up the fact that Peter murdered his sister? Don’t you think that felt like betrayal to Scott? That Derek promised to help him against this vicious murdering enigma who had ruined his life and nearly forced him to kill people, then showed up with him and shrugged his shoulders about the whole thing?

Derek was planning on killing the Alpha the entire time (he was never going to let Scott do it for his cure, even if that wasn’t just a lie to motivate Scott to help him). He just needed to find him first. Sure he wanted to build a new pack with Scott, but no matter how much he cared he was still using him, and badly.

After that I would have dropped Derek Hale from my life like a cold sack of potatoes; it’s a wonder Scott ever gives him the time of day again. And then of course Derek proceeds to be a huge asshole throughout season 2, so by the time the finale rolls around? Aside from doing what he needed to keep his mother safe, Scott has every goddamn right to not want the kind of toxic relationship that he would get if he agreed to be Derek’s beta. Derek is sketchy and secretive and violent and selfish. He obviously cares about Scott a great deal, and the betas to a lesser extent, but that absolutely does not excuse the horrible things he does.

And Scott is still going to be helping Derek in season 3, as we’ve been told, because that’s the kind of person Scott is: he just doesn’t want Derek as his Alpha. The narrative itself supports the idea that Derek is not a good Alpha for anyone: Scott never unites with him, Erica and Boyd actually run away from home just to leave his sorry ass, both Peter and Dr. Deaton and think little of him and Isaac, in case you forgot, was going to leave as well. He came back to help Scott, and why he decided to stay after may very well be attributed to that, not Derek.

So you do NOT get to disparage Scott while defending poor, hurt Derek. I do not care about Derek’s past. It is entirely possible to live through the kind of tragedy he has experienced without becoming an abuser.

If I have to read another comment about how sad and selfless Derek is and how cruel and heartless Scott is, I’m going to scream.

I’m fairly new to the “fandom” for MTV’s Teen Wolf. When I first heard of the show, I scoffed. All I knew about it was that it was loosely based upon the Michael J. Fox film of the same name, that Tyler Posey — an actor I remembered from playing Jennifer Lopez’s son in Maid in Manhattan years ago — was the lead and said “teen wolf,” that Tyler Hoechlin — who I knew from a Paul Newman film — was playing the foil character to said lead, and that the guy who created Criminal Minds was behind this show as well. I scoffed, because I was, am, and always will be a loyal and diehard Michael J. Fox fan, adamant that a film of his oughtn’t be touched, particularly by the likes of MTV. I had never seen the show, and yet, I knew that Scott McCall was the main character.

It wasn’t until approximately halfway through the current hiatus between seasons two and three that I finally succumbed and began watching. I was living with a friend of mine, Katherine, and she had season one on DVD, insisting that I watch it. We struck a bargain — I’d watch Teen Wolf, and she would begin either LOST or The Walking Dead. It seemed fair, we both knew the other would get sucked in. And sucked in I was. I watched four episodes in one morning with her, neither of us moving from the couch, her mother cracking jokes as she passed. I was enamored; the show was campy, but not over-the-top, and the acting was steadily improving with each episode, the growth of every actor nearly tangible.

And as we viewed, I starting taking mental notes. The main character was clearly Scott McCall, a youth who, while out one reckless evening, was bitten by a rogue werewolf called an Alpha. His dramatic foil was Derek Hale, a born werewolf who was hunting the aforementioned Alpha, and his comedic foil was his best friend, “Stiles” Stilinski. There was a love interest, the mysterious new girl, Allison Argent, there was backstory in Stiles’s ongoing crush on head popular girl, Lydia Martin, and there was antagonism amongst Scott, Stiles, and Derek, as well as the two teens and a fellow lacrosse player, Jackson Whittemore. Four episodes in, I felt I had a fairly firm grasp of who everyone was.

A few weeks later, I moved out of Katherine’s and back to my hometown to live with my uncle and cousin. And one day I got bored. I pulled out my phone, opened up Netflix, and decided to continue watching Teen Wolf. In less than forty-eight hours, I found I had finished the entire series so far, and was ready for a rewatch. But more than that, I was ready to dive headfirst into fandom. I’d been a part of various fandoms before; when I was in the Glee fandom, back in its early days, I was literally recognized on the streets because of my blog. Once upon a time in the Supernatural fandom, my headcanons and fanfictions were popular. I understood fandom to a point, I enjoyed it to another, and I was eager to fall into a new one. So I fired up my laptop, opened up tumblr, and started blogging Teen Wolf things. I started reading fanfic, I started downloading the episodes to do various things with in photoshop, I started seeking out fanmixes. And I noticed one strong, surprising thing: The fandom didn’t seem too terribly fond of Scott McCall.

In fact, if one were to take the majority of tumblr’s behavior as irrefutable fact regarding Teen Wolf, the show isn’t even about him at all. No, if one were to take stock in the behavior of this blogging platform, on which most of the fandom is present, then Teen Wolf isn’t even about a teenage werewolf. It’s about Stiles Stilinski. Stiles Stilinski and his nonexistent romantic relationship with Derek Hale.

I would like to quickly make a disclaimer here: I do not dislike Stiles Stilinski, I am not saying I do not ship the beloved “Sterek.” I love Stiles Stilinski to a fault, and I ship Sterek as much as I ship “Stallison” or “Jydia.”

But the fact of the matter is this: Teen Wolf is, was, always will be about Scott McCall. And I don’t care what the fandom thinks — he is a character one ought to love, or at least understand and respect. And I’m going to tell you why.
